On the latest segment of WJAR TV Providence’s “Studio 10” program I discussed some of my favorite local places for great food. Below is more information about some of these spots and a few more I didn’t have time to get to! Enjoy! (Click on the highlighted link to view the TV segment)
Fine Dining, Special Places
India – 1600 Hope Street, Providence, RI
A beautifully decorated restaurant on the north side of Providence, India also has a nice outdoor seating area. It’s the place to go for a very special dinner and offers delicious and economical lunch plates as well. Don’t miss desserts, which look like works of 3-D art!

Cafe Assisi – 667 South Street, Suite 5, Wrentham, MA
Just a mile or so away from the popular Wrentham Outlet stores, Cafe Assisi is a wonderful place to dine on delicious and authentic Italian food. The outdoor garden is the place to be in nice weather, and everything from the salads (which feature a unique, orange-infused vinaigrette), the chicken Parmigiana, delicious pasta and sauces, and some tasty desserts is top-quality.

Riccardi’s – 901 Hathway Road, New Bedford, MA
A New Bedford institution since the mid-1970s, Riccardi’s offers delicious and reasonably priced Italian specialties. I’ve been enjoying their pizza (especially topped with Portuguese linguica) and lasagna with meatballs since my college years in the late 70s. Lunch specials hover around $11 for an entree plus soup or salad. They have a second, larger location in nearby Fairhaven.

Harry’s Bar & Grille, 407 W. Grove Street, Middleboro, MA
A casual and fun local establishment specializing in burgers, sandwiches, and comfort food. Thursday’s $9.99 quesadilla special is a great bargain, and be on the lookout for their specials, especially the lobster roll and the turkey dinner! Homemade soups and chowders are also excellent, as is the grapenut custard for dessert. In warm weather, dine out on their patio and enjoy an enormous frozen cocktail or a beer.

Tony’s Clam Shop – 861 Quincy Shore Drive, Quincy, MA
New England is swimming with seafood spots for fried clams, scallops, and lobster rolls. None of them are cheap, so if I am going to splurge, I want to go somewhere that has excellent quality for my money, and Tony’s fits that bill. Located across the street from Wollaston Beach in Quincy and offering indoor and outdoor seating. The lobster rolls are fresh and packed with lobster meat, and the French fries are golden perfection.

Gregg’s – 1940 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence, RI (& several other locations in RI)
While Gregg’s offers a wide variety of comfort food, burgers, and salads, the real draw here is dessert. The famous Death by Chocolate and various other layer cakes are legendary, and a person favorite are the eclairs, which must weigh three pounds and could be used to knock a potential mugger unconscious. ALWAYS save room for dessert at Gregg’s!
